Walgett is the primary service centre for a vast pastoral area which stretches to the Queensland border. The town is located by the Namoi River near its junction with the Barwon River in northern New South Wales. It is located 648 km north-west of Sydney via Mudgee and Gilgandra, 76 km from Lightning Ridge and 115 km north of Coonamble and has regular flights to Dubbo connecting residents to the major capital cities.

Walgett is  the 'Gateway to the Opal Fields'  on the road to the Lightning Ridge and the Grawin, Glengarry and Sheepyard Opal Fields. The district around the town is known for its wool, beef cattle, chick peas, barley, lucerne, fat lambs, sheep studs, cotton and wheat. Its riverside location makes it a good spot for fishing: Murray cod and yellowbelly being the predominant catches. The population in the town is divided equally between Aborigines and non-Aborigines.

Walgett provides doctors and health professionals with access to world leading NSW public school education system at Walgett Community College as we as St Joseph's Catholic Primary School.

There is also the Sacred Heart Primary School which provides educational programs from kindergarten to year 6.

In Walgett your dollar goes a lot further, giving you greater flexibility to continue your education, send your children to the top schools and universities in the city, and take regular holidays.

Walgett is a high demand market for health and medical services. This means that doctors can make a good income compared to highly competitive and over-supplied city locations.

But it is a low-cost market for housing, with the median price around $128,000 compared to a median price in Sydney of $1.2 million.  This house (opposite) is on the market asking $250,000.

Feel like getting away for the weekend, or attend a conference?  Walgett has you covered!

Walgett is a short flight to Dubbo Regional Airport which allows you to transfer to flights to Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Newcastle.

From Sydney you can head to holiday at Bondi Beach, or fly to Newcastle and experience the pristine beaches of the mid-North Coast.  Fly to Brisbane and head to the Gold Coast, or enjoy international shopping in Melbourne.

Walgett gives you the opportunity to practice in a bucolic country town with the convenience of accessing Australia's cosmopolitan centres.
